5 Things Smart Managers Do to Build Strong Teams

Team is defined as “A group of players forming one side in a competitive game or sport”

For your company to prosper, you must figure out how to build a team that works well together. That can be a difficult task.  After all, creating a team means bringing together people with different skillsets and varied personalities to work towards a common goal–a complex undertaking.

When I look at the tactics smart managers implement, I see five common threads to how they approach team-building:

  1. Hiring the right people.

Hiring someone just to have a body in the room can hurt your team. Companies that do that end up with a revolving door. The cost of a bad hire is steep not just on the quality of work but on the company’s overall moral. Investing the time in hiring the right people for the role will have immense payoff later.

  1. Value each role.

Each team member brings something special to the table, treating each role as an essential part of the operation is critical. Each team member should feel like their job matters.

  1. Communicate

The best way to demonstrate value between team members is through communication. It’s difficult to feel like you are part of a team when everybody has information that hasn’t been shared with you yet or when team members don’t fill each other in on what they’re working on. When I talk with candidates about their frustrations with their current jobs, lack of transparency in their current organization is often a top motivator for seeking new employment.

  1. Set goals

Setting short and long-term goals with your team also becomes the foundation for every task they set out to complete each day.  It’s important to note that these goals should be realistic so that you and your team don’t feel like you are working for a lost cause. Having milestones and deadlines can give team members opportunities to help each other out and band together for success.

  1. Celebrate Successes

Celebrating your successes and milestones also brings your team together and allows everyone to see that when they work together, great things can happen. This also helps each person to feel visible and that what they’re doing has an impact.
